Overview

Description

This research-informed presentation offers an in-depth exploration of developmental dyscalculia, focusing on the cognitive, emotional, and contextual factors that influence mathematical difficulties. Designed specifically for dyscalculia assessors and related professionals, this presentation aims to bridge the gap between current research and practical assessment and intervention approaches.

Learning outcomes

Participants will examine the cognitive foundations of dyscalculia, including the roles of working memory, inhibition, and attentional control, and how these impact mathematics learning. The course also covers co-occurrence with other developmental conditions—such as dyslexia —and supports assessors in making decisions about differential or multiple diagnoses.

We will address the relationship between dyscalculia and mathematics anxiety, clarifying their differences and intersections. We will also discuss what remains unknown or debated in the field, encouraging reflective and evidence-aware practice.

The course will also introduce the Numeralis Project (www.numeralis.co.uk), highlighting cutting-edge findings and implications for professional practice.
