Description
Scores achieved in the WRIT can be influenced by a wide range of factors. These include: the battery's age and flaws in the design; language development; experience of education; culture; extent of reading experience; presence of visual difficulties; strengths/weaknesses in working memory, processing speed, attention and/or impulse control; and level of perseverance.
The presentation will look at each of the four WRIT subtests, exploring ways in which background information, observation of approaches, and analysis of responses can provide vital "clues" that contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's abilities. It will consider how that information can then be used within a report to support the information from the scores, or to explain why the scores do not accurately reflect an individual's abilities.
Learning outcomes
- Develop a range of ways in which an individual’s responses to WRIT can be evaluated qualitatively
- Gain a better understanding of how that qualitative information can be used within a report.
Course prerequisites
- Level 7 or equivalent in assessing individuals with SpLDs
- Assessors who use WRIT as part of a diagnostic assessment for SpLDs
- Primary focus will be on adults (as this is the presenter’s area of expertise) but the content will also be relevant to assessors working within secondary schools.
