The course will broaden knowledge and understanding by considering a range of different assessment profiles which evidence dyslexia. It will look beyond the scores and ensure assessors effectively consider the background information and qualitative information along with the scores. It will consider protective and compensatory factors and their impact on assessment and diagnosis. Assessors will have the opportunity to work through case studies to investigate how aspects of background information, quantitative and qualitative information are synthesised to form a diagnostic outcome. The course will also look at the recommendations made in the case studies and why they are chosen to suit the profile.

The session will include:

  • An overview of the different ages and stages when an individual may request an assessment and why
  • The complex nature of assessment - when is it dyslexia and when isn't it?
  • What are protective and compensatory factors?
  • The importance of individual profiles of strengths and weaknesses in planning intervention and support
  • Discussion of complex case studies to investigate how aspects of background information, quantitative and qualitative information are synthesised to form a diagnostic outcome and how to match recommendations to need
