   Course Summary
A practical session which enables specialist teachers/assessors working with primary and secondary learners to extend their skills both in assessment and support of SpLD Learners. This session covers the ‘tricky profiles’ which evidence variations of dyslexia or co-occurring SpLDs. The course will explore ‘tricky profiles’ of dyslexia and other SpLDs in context of a multiple deficit model; protective, compensatory factors, their impact on assessment and diagnosis.
   Course Detail

The SEND Code of Practice, places the ‘Assess, Plan, Do , Review' central to the effective support and teaching of students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD). This practical course is an opportunity for specialist teachers/assessor working with primary/ secondary students to extend their knowledge and gain confidence in the assessment and support of students with complex SpLD profiles.

·         Exploring multiple deficit models of SpLD, how the latter explains high levels of co-occurrence and implication for assessment and ‘diagnosis' including assessment for co-occurring difficulties.

·         Investigate protective, compensatory factors as of the dyslexic profile and the need for multiple measures of reading.

·         Review importance of individual profiles of strengths and weaknesses in planning intervention, for a successful programme to be planned, to do, then to be reviewed.

·         Delegates are invited to bring case studies from their own working practice for discussion, as these case studies will be used to, illustrate how to develop appropriate assessment practice and devise individually tailored intervention programmes

   CPD Themes
  • Reviewing principles of psychometrics, statistics, assessment and underlying theory
   Audience
  • Assessors
   Pre-requisites
  • Specialist teacher or psychologists. If available, delegates to bring ‘unusual’ standard profile of a student they have assessed or worked with, which is suitably anonymised, to discuss with colleagues
   Learning Outcomes

  • • An application of this theory to their case studies to enable a delegate to apply in their work settings
  • • Delegates will be able to design and review support plans which enable successful learning to occur for students with a complex SpLD profile
